Perspectives | Denmark: What Makes Danish Design Danish?

We know Danish design when we see it. Or at least we think we do. The pale woods. The beautiful restraint. The chairs we can identify from across a room. The extraordinary relationship between form, function and material.

But what makes Danish design Danish?

That’s the question we’re taking to Copenhagen in June 2027 as Designhounds launches Perspectives | Denmark, a new professional exchange connecting North American design professionals with Danish designers, makers, brands and design culture.

And we’re starting with a very small group. Just 10 of us.

FIRST, LIVE LIKE A COPENHAGENER

We’re timing Perspectives | Denmark around 3daysofdesign, Copenhagen’s extraordinary annual design festival. But we don’t want to arrive at the festival, start walking through showrooms and call that an understanding of Danish design.

Before we look at the products, we want to understand a little more about the culture that produces them. So we’ll arrive in Copenhagen on June 6 and spend our first days exploring Danish life through food, neighborhoods, bicycles, sustainability, urban farming, architecture, craft and a few strange little things we haven’t discovered yet.

• There will be smørrebrød.
• There will almost certainly be bicycles.
• There may be ceramics, harbor water, gardens, workshops and people doing interesting things in places we would never find on our own.

The point isn’t sightseeing. It’s context.

THEN, GO INSIDE DANISH DESIGN

On June 8, we shift from Danish life to Danish design. We’re working directly with the team behind 3daysofdesign to develop private encounters, Design Walks, Long Table Dinners and opportunities to meet some of the designers, makers and studios shaping contemporary Danish design. We would much rather have three extraordinary conversations than race through eight showrooms.

Then, on June 9 and 10, 3daysofdesign begins.

Part of our time will be organized, with selected access and shared experiences. Part of it won’t be. Because one of the great pleasures of Copenhagen during 3daysofdesign is simply being able to follow what interests you. Go down the side street. Stay too long in the tiny studio. Talk to the person who actually made the thing. Change your plans.

ONE TABLE. TWO DESIGN CULTURES.

Somewhere along the way, we’ll sit down together with Danish designers, makers and industry voices for the first Perspectives | Denmark Table. No stage. No PowerPoint. No panel of people talking at an audience.

Just a table, dinner and a question:

What can Danish and North American design culture learn from one another?

That conversation is where the larger Perspectives program begins because Denmark isn’t really a one-week trip.

PERSPECTIVES CONTINUES

Perspectives | Denmark is designed as a six-month professional exchange.

What begins in Copenhagen will continue through a series of virtual conversations between Danish and North American design voices over the months that follow. We’ll talk about craft and manufacturing. Sustainability. Materials. Business. Customization. How designers work. How products are developed. What each market understands well and what we might learn from the other.

And rather than deciding every conversation before we arrive, we’re leaving room for Denmark itself to tell us what we should be talking about. The exchange will culminate in New York in November 2027, where we’ll bring the two communities together again and share what we’ve learned.

AND THEN THERE’S THE RETREAT

For those who don’t want to leave Copenhagen quite yet, neither do we. On June 11, a smaller group will head north for two additional nights along the coast of North Zealand.

This is the Perspectives Retreat: Denmark.

Think less itinerary, more immersion. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. The Danish coast. Art, architecture and landscape. Long meals. Small places. Makers and people we meet along the way. And, hopefully, a few things that are wonderfully difficult to explain in a brochure. We’ll use those two days to slow down and begin our first Perspectives dialogue in person, joined by a small number of Danish voices.

By then we’ll have spent five days looking, listening and asking questions. Now we get to talk about what we found.

Single Occupancy: $8,200 per person
Double Occupancy: $7,200 per person

Program pricing includes accommodations with breakfast, Designhounds/Perspectives programming, scheduled cultural and design experiences, selected group meals and ground transportation associated with the official itinerary.

Airfare and personal expenses are not included and a 5% paid-in-full discount is available at the time of reservation.

WHY WE’RE KEEPING IT SMALL

This first Perspectives | Denmark group is limited to 10 guests.

Ten people can fit around a table. Ten people can walk into a studio without turning it into a tour bus. Ten people can actually have a conversation with a maker. And ten people can get to know one another well enough that what begins in Copenhagen can continue long after we leave.

Hotel rooms are being secured individually as participants confirm rather than through a traditional group block. Current program pricing therefore depends upon the hotel inventory available at the time of reservation.

Once your reservation is confirmed and your room is secured, your program price is locked.
